Portia’s Travel Diaries

As a Solo Travel Girl, we always take the first step, alone!

12 Years ago, Portia Putatunda took her first step as a female solo traveler. Let’s take the steps together in to a new future.

“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.”

Hellen Keller

The Shy Girl goes Solo

As a talkative but an introvert, a collector of phobias, and an all-round general wuss, I wasn’t the obvious candidate for a life of travel and that too all on my own.

Over the past few years, I’ve faced more fears than I can really start to count, and all thanks to my solo trips that I have always come away a better person for it – something that’s become one of the major themes of many of my blog posts. Throughout 2016 and 2017, I even did one thing a month that scared me in an effort to push myself further!

My Travel Values

My travel style is Deep Travel. That means travelling slower whenever possible, and trying to really get to know the world. It’s the journey that I enjoy and want to talk about and not just ticking off my “top” destinations. It means connecting with locals, trying new food, meditating in the nature, or exploring the culture of a place.

It means revisiting places over and over, rather than racking up ticks for a checklist. And it means getting “off the beaten path” sometimes, in search of a more authentic experiences. But, most importantly, it simply means travelling as much and as deeply as possible in order to see, meet, and understand as much of the world as I can.

Why Do I Travel?

Above everything, travel should be fun! At all times in life, I’m generally in search of peace and a sweet surge of happiness that comes from meeting with strangers – you can usually find me sitting around with locals, living like a local on my solo trips, eating and drinking to my heart’s content, laughing too loudly, and hopping onto whatever activity sounds like the most amount of fun!

So, that’s my travel style. And no, I’m not rich and in fact, I have spent all my savings in the past one year to travel and pursue traveling as my full time career because it’s the only thing I can do!

If any or all of those values resonate with you, then you’ll probably enjoy a few of my blog posts. Even if they don’t, hopefully you’ll enjoy exploring the world through my eyes!

How I travel?

Deep travel and getting to know the world, appreciate Mother Earth’s beauty are my major travel blogging ethics, but within that a whole range of different travel styles exist. So, this is how I like to travel…

Culture. I love to travel to meet different people from various cultural background. Especially contemporary culture which embraces older traditions. Art, street art, food, street food, home-cooked food prepared by locals, befriending locals… anything that helps me connect with what a place is all about. And also give me a reason to want to come back over and over again.

Food. Food is a great way to get to know culture – especially through cooking classes and food tours – and I love to eat, so Food and Drink have started to become a frequent topic in my blog.

Outdoors. Hiking, biking, nature walks, birdwatching tours, beaches, sunsets, landscapes, nature, wildlife, adventure. I love to be outdoors and, while I love cities too, my favourite travel experiences are almost always in the outdoors. I truly believe that Nature Therapy is the best therapy to soak in, anytime!

Alternative Travel. Under the most popular destinations, getting “off the beaten path”, and explore underrated or up-and-coming places which don’t yet see the tourism they deserve. These offbeat places are the ones that are the closest to my heart.

Overland. I’m a geek for long train, bus and car journeys and love the slowness of overland travel.
